Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs 85/15 ground beef
  • 3 tbsp chili powder
  • 1.5 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 cup chunky salsa
  • 0.25 cup beef bone broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp lime juice

Instructions:

  1. Place the raw ground beef directly into the base of a 4-quart to 6-quart slow cooker. Do not pre-brown the meat.
  2. Add the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands or a stiff wooden spoon to massage the spices into the cold meat until evenly distributed.
  3. Pour the chunky salsa, beef bone broth, and tomato paste over the seasoned meat. Do not stir completely; allow it to layer.
  4. Cover and cook on Low for 6 hours until the meat is fully browned and the aroma fills the kitchen.
  5. Once cooked, use a meat masher to break the beef into fine crumbles. Stir in the lime juice to brighten the flavors until the sauce looks glossy and integrated.
  6. Rest the meat on the Warm setting for 10 minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute.
